Dear Family and Friends,
We are getting many emails inquiring as to what’s going on, so we thought it might be time to send a general newsletter again.
As most all of you know, any kind of move is challenging, and cross-country moves, particularly. Our latest news is that we are into the new home: lock, stock and barrel, as they say. Our PODS were due to both be delivered to our new driveway on Thursday, February 14th, but due to a big winter storm that left roads and our driveway icy, they only delivered one, for fear that the ice might cause more problems than they already had.
I say, “problems than they already had” as they called us a few days earlier to tell us that they had dropped our first unit as it was delivered to the warehouse here in Louisville. Because of the icy conditions, it slipped off the forklift and landed on front corner of the unit, causing the door to be jammed. They had to come out later to open it for us, as we were unable to do so ourselves.

There was a great deal of damage to the items stored in this unit, of course. (This is the first of the two units, packed the end of July/first of August and in storage all this time!) We unloaded, with the help of family and family friends on Friday (Thanks to all of you who helped!!!) and took pictures of damaged items as they came off the POD. The worst damage is to Norma’s mother’s piano! It now has many scratches on it that weren’t there before, and a large hole in the veneer towards the bottom of the left side! You can see some of that here…
OUCH!
Also, lots of damage to the wooden fabric cabinets and bookcases, and to the many, many plastic storage bins for fabric and craft items from the sewing room. Also the bookcases and desk units from the office were destroyed beyond use. All will have to be replaced, which the PODS Company says they “will make good on”. It’s going to take some time, to construct a list and prices for replacements. BUT, there were three sewing machines and at least three computers and peripherals on the unit, too, which we haven’t yet unpacked. If they are damaged… well, you get the picture.

We are getting settled though, and are enjoying the house. It has some odd things about it that will take getting used to, but some things that are very, very nice, too. The odd things include a half bath and a very small utility/laundry room - both of the doors to which are in the living room! Inebriated architect, perhaps? But the kitchen and the master suite are very nice, as is the large bedroom upstairs. That one will serve as Norma’s work space. The other bedrooms are smaller, but one is large enough for a guest room with the queen sized bed we put in, and the other just large enough for a working office for me, IF I can stay organized!
And then, there’s the creek in the backyard. We see so many birds each day, and the last three days we’ve seen what we think might be a beaver going up and down the creek bed. We say we think it’s a beaver, because it looks like one, but doesn’t have the large flat tail. With that last storm, the trees stayed “frosty” for several days… beautiful!
As you can imagine, trying to find just the right place for everything in a house that’s about 400 sq. ft. smaller than the one in Seattle, is challenging… and tiring, too. Thank goodness we have that garage. I look forward to the day I can get the van into it again! I’ve only had to scrape ice off the windshield one time so far, and don’t relish doing very much of that anymore.
The transcript situation still has not been resolved, though we’ve been assured from NM that it has been sent to the Louisville schools. They should have it this week, for sure. The Commonwealth of Kentucky, meanwhile, has issued me my teaching certificate at long last, though they mailed it to Seattle first. Seems our change of address came after they had issued it.
We’ll eventually catch up, but have both suffered with the flu this past two weeks and are recovering. Hope this answers most of the queries, and we’ll make a point to try to answer those individual questions as they come in!
Love, Tim & Norma P.S. The rest of this website is under construction, and will be used for the business, once we get settled. |
